MEMBERSHIPS
Looking for a space that sparks and inspires your imagination? A space to make your creative clay visions become a reality. Here at Earthbound we strive to be so much more than just a studio space. We intend on creating a beautiful sanctuary that fosters and supports a community of artists. A space where you can work quietly as you lose yourself completely in your project or a space where you can bounce ideas off fellow artists of all ages and levels of experiences. Memberships are like magical keys that give you access to this creative oasis. They must be purchased in person at our studio location.
Who is eligible?
* Approval required by owners in advance. Come on into the studio to discuss memberships options with the owners Sandra and Frode. We require that you have taken one of our classes or have clear recent ceramic studio experience in order to qualify for membership and passes options. Must have wheel experience to use wheels.
Earthbound reserves the right to decline and approve memberships as they see fit. This space is designed with the intention of being supportive, and inclusive. Being respectful of others is an important prerequisite for memberships. Members are aware and respectful of the space, other members and adhere to safety procedures. We prefer that members take a 4-week beginner/refresher course in wheel throwing or handbuilding to orient themselves to the studio procedures if their studio experience is not recent. If a prospective member would like to join without a refresher course, we would like to do an in-person interview and an orientation. ALL NEW MEMBERS MUST MEET WITH THE OWNERS TO GO OVER STUDIO PROCEDURES BEFORE BEGINNING THEIR MEMBERSHIP OR PASSES. (After that orientation the studio is yours!)
RULES FOR GLAZING
We are a cone 5-6 studio. This determines what clays and glazes go into the kiln. Glazing is an art form all alone. We love that people get excited about glazing! If you are new, start with the studio glazes (we have a beautiful selection!!) to develop a foundational understanding of how they work and how to use them. Once you have experience and want to purchase glazes, they MUST be approved and discussed with the owners. Glazes all move differently depending on layering, clay bodies and temperatures. When glaze accidents happen in the kiln it is a mess to clean. It can damage both shelves and work done by other members. We noticed glazes that are fluxes or the popular Running Hot Chowder are movers. If you are layering, using for the first time or testing out glaze combinations, we ask that you make your own cookies and have these placed under your piece on the glaze shelf to go in the kiln for firing. We currently don’t charge for glaze accidents and want to keep it that way! Always ask if you are uncertain!
CLAY CLAY CLAY
We ask that you purchase clay from our studio. We will do our best to order clay that you like. Just talk to us and we can squeeze it into our next order. Outside clay can change up our reclaim (recycled clay). We like to have an idea of what is going into the reclaim bucket!
*No production potters allowed
***If you’re aspiring to be a full-time potter who sells online and at events, we appreciate your enthusiasm! However, our current space isn’t set up for the high volume that production potters typically create. This requires significant kiln space and extensive use of stock glazes, which we cannot support at this time. Thank you for your understanding!
Here’s what you get for $150 a month:
Unlimited hours a month of studio access! Yes, that is right! We have changed it so that you can come and enjoy the space without the stress of counting hours. These hours can be used anytime, but just be aware of classes happening as instructors need a suitable environment to provide effective instruction.
Access during class times-as space allows (students are prioritized during class times)
Use of stock glazes (7 dipping, 10+ beautiful brush on glazes and a variety of underglazes), equipment and tools
Use of an assigned cubby/locker to store your personal clay/tools
Use of a personal shelf for storing your work in progress
SIZE MATTERS! Firing of up to 15 pieces depending on size. The size we are thinking is around 15 mugs or cereal bowl sizes for the month. So, if you are making very large bowls or planters, those can be the equivalent of up to 5 mugs! Sculptures and large, tall piece can take up even more space in the kiln! Please be aware of the space you are occupying on the shelves in the studio and in the kiln. If you are uncertain or feel that your skills are heading towards larger pieces (which is amazing!!) please address these large pieces with us. (larger pieces are subject to additional fees and may take longer to fire)
Monthly dues are paid through this website and are a subscription.
10% off classes and workshops
CLAY AND GLAZE POLICY: Members are required to purchase their clay from Earthbound. The cost for a 25 lb. bag depends on type. Our recycled clay ranges between $10 - $15 dollars. There will be an additional cost for firing large items or items that take up a lot of kiln space. No outside clay or glazes are to be used without Sandra’s approval in advance. *I will want to see the bag or bottle information to confirm Cone temperature (if unmarked, the answer will be “no”). If your unapproved clay or glaze gets in and damages the kiln you may be released from your membership or asked to help pay for repairs, depending on the situation.
When are open studio times?
Both members and students currently enrolled in a class (not a workshop) will have access to open studio hours. Open studio is essentially whenever we are open. Just be aware of times when classes are in session, it is crucial that you are respectful and do not disturb the teacher or impede on their ability to help and support students. On Saturdays we might have a morning workshop or a special gathering. These are always using the handbuilding tables. Sometimes they are small, and sometimes pretty full. Just ask in advance. Speaking in low voices and being aware of your presence in the studio space is always important. For the most part we try to schedule big workshops to run during times that we are closed to free up space for our members!
STUDIO PASSES
At Earthbound we understand that not everyone has the same schedules and free time to play and create. Knowing this we also want to accommodate members who can’t get into the studio as often as they would like. Studio passes might fit your lifestyle best. Keep in mind that passes are for 1 person and for individuals who have recent experience with ceramics and working in a studio environment. Take a class with us first to refresh your skills and understanding of our space. We will be offering 2 packages of studio passes. One that is for 5 passes at $125, and 10 passes for $200 dollars. Each pass is essentially a day pass! You can use these passes at your convenience. However, even if you come in for one hour to glaze, that counts as a pass used. You will have access to studio equipment and dipping glazes and underglazes. Be aware that if you begin to take up shelf space with work that is at various stages, we might have to discuss further options that fit your studio needs as shelving space is so important to studio flow. Unfortunately, with passes we cannot provide you with space to keep and store supplies as we have no way of knowing the frequency of your visits. As for how many pieces fired included with passes come out to 13-15 total over 5-6 passes. Again, we are visualizing mug and cereal bowl size. Bigger work means less pieces. It works out similar to a monthly membership if that helps. To qualify for passes you MUST also have taken one of our classes or have previous recent ceramic experience. Please come into the studio in person to discuss membership and passes options with us! Passes can only be purchased in person at the studio.
What is expected of you as a member?
It is expected is that you will operate in the space, adhering to the stated policies of this studio and set a good example for students. If you encounter a situation that doesn’t meet the studio standard, I expect you to communicate with me about it.
Cleaning up is always the biggest of deals in a ceramics studio and it is a matter of health and safety. It’s a huge deal to me because my health is most likely to be affected over years of exposure to unsafe dust.
Members are expected to wrap up their work and clean up prior to leaving. Closing times are firm so be aware of the time you need to adequately clean your space.
Members are expected to keep their workspace clean and to use an appropriate amount of space sharing tables as they work.
Sanding of projects is not allowed in studio.
Members will clean the studio wet (clay dust is bad!). No sweeping allowed.
Production potting and building is not allowed by members in the studio.
Members are required to clean, dry and organize all equipment after each use.
Members will be held responsible for damage to facility or equipment if obvious negligence or improper use is the cause.
Earthbound is a communal space and equipment is available on a first come first served basis. All members are expected to share space and equipment fairly as well as respectfully work side by side in a communal creative space.
Items over sixteen inches in height or needing more than one kiln shelf, will be fired if space is available and only when doing so will not interfere with the flow of other projects needing to be fired. Attempts will be made to fire large items. Additional fees may be assessed and charged in advance on approved large projects.
All members and students will be required to sign a waiver form.
